About Confluence Tax

Our place in the biotechnology
and technology space

The low-down

Confluence Tax is the only UK tax advisory firm to provide advice to businesses and individuals purely within the technology and biotechnology industries. We therefore understand the industry issues and trends and how they relate to the UK tax system and its international aspects.

Confluence Tax is a member of the BioIndustry Association –
partner Colin Hailey is chair of the BIA Tax and Finance Committee – and a member of One Nucleus.

In 2010 Colin, founder and tax partner, turned down promotion in favour of establishing Confluence Tax. The tax system as applied to biotechnology and technology companies is complex and many companies require tailored advice to navigate through it – hence, Confluence Tax was born.

In 2021 Confluence Tax merged with a US counterpart, Frazier & Deeter. It has long been the ambition of Confluence Tax to offer services wider than just UK tax advice and merging with Frazier & Deeter will enable clients to continue to benefit from everything the firm already offers, but with access to an expanded range of services and global expertise. Visit our services page to find out what we offer for both UK and global clients.

Bespoke service

Our expert team understands the complex issues that affect the tax position of tech and biotech companies. Being located in a single office means your business benefits from end-to-end advice and that our team works together to develop the best solutions tailored to each situation.

Fees

Our fees are competitive, sensible and flexible. We usually work on a fixed-fee basis and are happy to discuss issues and ideas before charges are incurred.

International

As well as being UK tax experts, we also help companies understand the international aspects of their structure and the associated tax implications. This includes setting up subsidiaries overseas and flipping to put overseas parent companies on top of UK businesses.

BioIndustry Association

Founding partner Colin Hailey is chair of the Finance and Tax Advisory Committee of the BioIndustry Association (BIA). The Committee guides the BIA’s policies and initiatives to create a supportive financial environment for UK bioscience companies. The Committee is the forum where BIA members can directly input into policy development and interactions with Government on finance and tax matters.

HMRC & Treasury

Confluence Tax has excellent relationships with Government bodies including HMRC, HM Treasury and Innovate UK, ensuring that we can liaise with decision makers and be involved in the latest developments. Confluence was involved in the 10-year review of R&D tax credits and the patent box. We are now engaged in the OECD-driven reform of the patent box and potential changes to capital gains tax and venture capital schemes. Confluence goes that bit further too and is often invited to input to working groups to inform and advise on matters relating to specialist tax issues within biotech.
